18! Woo! Now I'm Tired
- September 1, 2008 - 4:57am
It is 1am here, as i type this, so any and all typing/spelling errors are forgiven.....
I just got home from seeing The Dark Knight in IMAX, and it was awesome, even if it was the 4th time seeing the movie....
Also, I'm 18 today! yay me!
now Im going to bed.....
What the heck?! Whats up with this?
- August 26, 2008 - 10:59am
This is gonna be short, as i have to get ready for class.....
i installed kubuntu linux on my 2nd HDD, and now when i go to boot into WINDOWS, i get a system crash right after clicking on the user icon to log in. I know I didn't overwrite Windows, because after I installed linux, I first booted into windows to make sure everything worked, and it did. To make matters worse, I cant seem to install anything in linux, as i go into the console, and for example type "sudo apt-get install fireofx" and everything goes smoothly until the window displays "configuring-sun-java6-bin" and a liscense agreement. there is the word "ok" at the bottom, but i cannot click it, and the install will not progress!
HELP!

Some of you may remember I was having computer problems earlier in the year. Well, it turned out to be nothing more than a stick of bad memory, so I FINALLY got around to sending in a request for an RMA number from Crucial. If they decide to send me replacement memory, I will then have 4gigs of memory in my system, which is the max supported by a 32bit OS, right?
anyway, here's to hoping!

So I have these Hard Drives....
- August 6, 2008 - 2:23pm
In my computer. Windows is installed on one of them, but the other lies there, useless, as windows doesn't recognize it. Do any of you smart tech types know how I might make windows recognize the drive, so I can use i for things like media storage and the like? I understand there are pins involved, and possibly software....![]()
Or I could just install Kubuntu on it, but I really have no interest in hunting for drivers for my wireless card, I've done that before, with my laptop....NOT FUN! >(

so i reformatted and installed windows, now with 100% less RAID-0. Only to find out that since I had to install windows on my laptop using the same CD while my desktop was out of commission, it is no longer a valid product key, which means I have 30 days to talk to MS and see if they will cut me some slack. Also, there is way lag when dragging windows around the screen, maybe cuz i need to update video card drivers?
any advice on the 30 day thing would be appreciated.....
EDIT:
Just found out that MS support requests cost $59. I am totally fucked, aren't I?
I dont have the $$ for a support request OR to buy a new copy of Windows to use that product key.....

No, it is not HD, those cost like $900-$1200
model is SC-MX10R

So...My desktop was broken for a while, and it turned out it was a bad stick of memory. It is since working again, I have discovered it cannot go online. The wireless card APPEARS to be working, as it detects, and sometimes connects to, the router. When I go to go online, it gives a "page cannot be displayed" error. When I switch to ethernet cable, and plug it into the router, it connects, but still no pages displayed. I go to repair the ethernet connection, and get a "Failed to Query TCPIP Settings of the connection, cannot proceed." error.
typing ipconfig into the command prompt yields "an internal error occured, the request is not supported."
now, I have tried
but that yields no fix. I have tried coping the known-to-work tcpip.sys and ndis.sys files from this computer (laptop) as well as 3 separate repair programs, nothing worked. I am faced with the delimma of reinstalling windows, but I have so much data that needs backing up, and no where to put it, and not enough cash for an external HDD. Also, My HDDs (2x500Gb) are formatted RAID-0, and I do not know how re installation will affect that.Code:netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
I have heard ideas of a repair install, but clicking "upgrade" instead of "fresh install", but will that mess up the RAID?
*is frustrated*
any ideas?

Atlas Shrugged
The Gulag Archipelago
The Naked Angels
House of Leaves
all supposed to be good, (i already read Atlas Shrugged, I just didnt own it) so I will get to reading.

So I found a 1989 Firebird on Craigslist for $1200. has 108,000 miles on it, autimatic transmission, but needs a new horn. Blue book value somewhere between $1300 and $1600. Good deal? I have a poll up, but feel free to leave comments here.

networking problems...
- June 14, 2008 - 6:02pm
So my desktop is working again, but there is a teensey problem, the wireless card is fried. I have an ethernet cable I can use until I get a new card, but my computer does not seem to like it... when i plug in the cable to my router, and the other end to my computer, it does not connect! when I tell the computer to "repair" the connection, it says "failed to query TCP/IP Settings of the connection, cannot proceed"
Now, I have no IDEA what this means, or how to fix it. I installed the ethernet drivers that came with the motherboard again, but no dice, it still gives the same error, and I tried restarting after the install.
Any help to be given?
The Good and the Bad
- June 13, 2008 - 8:26pm
The Good: My desktop is working again, turns out one of the memory sticks was bad.
The Bad: the wireless card is still not working, meaning I cannot get online, and i need a new card.
ended up buying new memory as well as a uninteruptible power supply unit, so if the power goes again, nothing will be fried

So I got the ew Processor in the mail today. Installed it, no dice. for the backstory, see my earlier blog posts.
Anyhoo, it still dont work. Now, the only part we have not replaced is the Graphics Card. My VERY EXPENSIVE (at the time) graphics card. We have tested the monitor, the cable, every other thing display related, so it has to be the Gcard. The comp repair guy said he would swap in an alternate card to test if i brought it in, free of charge, so i will do that on my next free day. Right Now, Im going to go see Indy IV. I need to stare into space for a while.

So yeah, some Ron Paulites have a catchy video going around the intertubes, and it is pretty cool. Even if you dont agree with his policies, you should check it out just to appreciate the effort put into the vid.
Oh, and apparently, since RP cant win the presidency, they want him to lead a revolution a la the American Revolution back in the day.

So, I have had trials and tribulations over the past few weeks diagnosing my computer problems. Finally narrowed it down to Motherboard or processor. Bought the mobo, installed, hey guess what? there went $150. Luckily, the processor was still under warranty, so it was not a complete loss. It told me that it was not the mobo, after all. So off goes the old processor for RMA. should be expected in a little over a week, allowing for 3 days for shipping both ways and 2 days processing on Intel's end. I hope to god this is the last bit, I have literally got no more time to devote to this. ![]()
In other news, I just ordered Randy Pausch's book "The Last Lecture" and Ron Paul's "The Revolution- A Manifesto" hope they are as good as the reviews say.

So the local gamestop is going to be hiring soon. I picked up and filled out an application, but have not yet turned it in as I was having some reservations. I know people tell stories of bad experiences there, on both sides of the counter. Now, my local store has always been excellent, and I have never had any problems. However, I have no idea as to what may go on between employees and supervisors, etc...

I'm freakin out.
I just spent $250 USD on an 80 gig ipod and had everything working great. tried to sync a video with thinliquidfilm, the ubuntu wiki community recommended GUI app for vid syncing, and now none of my songs display on the ipod. they are still there, taking up room, but the ipod says they are data type "other". tried clearing and re-syncing, everything went fine, but still they do not show in the ipod. read that restoring factory settings in iTunes works, but guess what? no iTunes for linux.
this ipod is ONE DAY OLD!
What do I do?!

For backstory, read "so my desktop is borked" , my previous blog entry.
I'M beginning to think it may indeed be the MotherBoard, as we had a power outage last night.(I was asleep at the time) and now the damn thing wont boot. the drives are fine, they power up and stuff, but nothing that draws power direct from the motherboard, such as keyboard, mouse, wireless card, have any lights coming on, and thus no power. Now if I get a new motherboard, presumably the same type, could I install it without having to wipe the OS? or should I get my drives backed up and just do a clean install?
so my desktop is, like, borked or something
- April 9, 2008 - 10:40am
So I go off to work this afternoon, all is well. 4 hours later, I return, my comp is locked up, black screen, no task manager showing up, noting working. I reboot, manually due to lock up, and run chkdsk. it runs fine. Upon booting into windows, all sorts of errors arrive, I believe most have to do with th fact that there is no internet connection available. this is ludicrious. I go to manually tell it to connnect, and it says "not connected" in the status box. double-click to connnect, get prompted "are you sure you want to disconnect" WTF? no internet, cannot connect, errors on boot.....
I know the router is working, as I am typing this on my laptop....the worst bit is, it happened while I was at work, so I didn't see any at-the-moment errors....
Any Suggestions?
Censorship? The Conclusion
- April 8, 2008 - 2:19am
It was all a joke, as it turns out. The English teacher in question had arranged for the administrator to come and take the books. Only problem, he told no one else, not even the principal. The school was apparently inundated with calls screaming for blood, metaphorically speaking. The teacher was chewed out, the books returned, life goes on in Spotsylvania County Schools, Dept. of Ineptitude Education.
Censorship?
- April 3, 2008 - 2:08am
So I found out that my school administration has apparently rounded up all copies of the book 1984 and confiscated them. Tried to take people's personal copies as well. Dunno if it is a really bad joke or what, but it pisses me off. ![]()

First I found out that my english class has been assigned an "independent reading project" and I got The Count of Monte Cristo. I love the book, but we have a month to read it and write an 8-10 page research paper on it. the book is like ~1000 pages long!
then this afternoon, ice was messing with the power lines, and caused the power to flicker. by the time i got from the kitchen to my room, the power had flickered 3 times, and I believe it fried my computers motherboard(im on my laptop). It was plugged into a surge protecter, but did it help? NOPE.
now the damn thing will turn on, but neither the Keyboard nor Mouse will activate, no image is coming out of the vid card (the monitor works though) an I am shit outta luck.

so many of you are probably wondering about the title. I have had a VERY bad day.....so bad I believe i have been gypsy cursed.
I wake up this morning shivering, cold and generally full of malaise. unfortunately, i cannot miss school, since i have a lovely test in physics. My condition worsens all day, no doubt helped by my lack of $$ for food. By the last period of the day, I have acquired a pounding headache to boot. finally i can go home, and as I am walking out the door, a good friend comes up and asks me if I had brought my copy of Monty Python and the Holy Grail to school. He had asked me if i could borrow it, but never specified when. BEING THE KIND SOUL THAT i am, (sorry, hit caps lock, didn't know it) i told him i would run home and get it, since i live like a mile from school and he needs it for a latin club party. i drive home, only to get a call from my brother, who is staying after for the party, asking me to grab him $5 for pizza. so i turn around, get him some money, and go back. Now by this time, I have not eaten all day, and my headache is approaching "gonna be sick" level. I drop off the stuff, go home, and eat some hummus and pita bread. I throw clothes in to wash, and lay down. get a call from mom, can i go get lil brother form babysitters. I explain I have no clothes but the pajamas im wearing, as the rest are in the wash. she says do it anyway. so i go to the sitters, get brother, go home, go to sleep. by this time it is about 5:00pm. I go throw my clothes in the dryer, and mom says she is gonna take lil bro to a dance at his school. I say fine, be quiet my headache is still kicking. I try to sleep, headache gets so bad I puke up dinner. finally, sleep. fast forward to 10:00pm. i wake up, mom is home with pizza. i debate whether to go partake. i get up, start downstairs. slip on stairs.
