So I installed Xubuntu Linux 7.10 on my laptop, from which I type this. I cannot get my wireless card working, so I am using an ethernet cable, but it's really not so bad. Very interesting, the liberal use of command line, with which I have ZERO experience. Should be an interesting experience.

i have ubuntu linux 7.10 on one of my compy's 4 hard drives haha
have you gotten wine to work yet? it's quite nice - i got warcraft 3 to run on linux through wine.

  I only installed it an hour ago, so not yet. Did get VLC player for my MP3 needs, and flash player for youtube. It's like 1am here, so I am kinda zombie-like.....hahaha

    cool. i got flash installed (or at least something that plays flash haha) but youtube is messed up, not sure about other stuff. btw, turn on the best visual effects in appearance preferences, it's pretty cool like u can use alt-scroll to change the transparency of a window, even a full-screen game. also, when u drag windows around, u get a nice "jello"-y effect. quite cool

I tried linux recently... Did not go so well. Haha. I need my wireless card to get on, because my parents don't want me running an ethernet cable from the downstairs router to my room... So I had it for about a day before I moved on. I was to lazy to download le drivers from the web...

I'm so interested in making a move toward Linux. I don't know which one, or any of that, but it's calling to me. Are there problems like that, with wireless cards not working? I've got the same issue as Elsie.
I've also got Zero experience with a command line, which is sort of the deterrent, for the mean time anyways. Argh I really want to try it out, just fear what might happen.

Might want to check what you've got wireless chipset wise, though, before you go installing different drivers

    Some sites are saying the 43xx stuff was included as of kernel 2.6.17-rc2, but how much fiddling is required to get them working, I've no idea.

        It's not too bad once you get used to terminal, which is by far the best way to do it. There's a boatload of really nice guides out there for most of this stuff.

I'm planning to build a cheap machine to put Linux on and use it for Torrenting and what not. I'm also gonna use it as a Blu-Ray player and use that AMD Motherboard thats cheap but supports it the 480 G (don't remember the name really >.<). The first time I thought of installing linux on an old machine I couldn't find were to download it, but that was awhile ago and I was much noobier lawl

I use Linux at home and at work (converted from FreeBSD because of Flash support :\), but have never had the opportunity to try to get wireless working. Ubuntu is a pretty decent distro though, so it seems strange that they wouldn't have some support for most wireless out of the box.

  I actually have it working now. I dont know what kind of laptop you have, mine is a Compaq Presario v2000. It's older, so I installed Xubuntu for speed and Kubuntu because I like the KDE interface, lol.
