For backstory, read "so my desktop is borked" , my previous blog entry.

I'M beginning to think it may indeed be the MotherBoard, as we had a power outage last night.(I was asleep at the time) and now the damn thing wont boot. the drives are fine, they power up and stuff, but nothing that draws power direct from the motherboard, such as keyboard, mouse, wireless card, have any lights coming on, and thus no power. Now if I get a new motherboard, presumably the same type, could I install it without having to wipe the OS? or should I get my drives backed up and just do a clean install?

I go where I please, and I please where I go

Well, if your windows is not an OEM version (they're motherboard locked, although if you can convince M$ your motherboard is toast they will usually unlock it for you) you could conceiveably swap it, although I garuntee it this will cause more problems than it will fix. Stick your drives in another computer, back em up and clean install. And all is well again.

damn, mine is an OEM version. bah. so I need to find another computer with at least 2 SATA ports, cuz my drives are in RAID 0. when I do a clean install, I'm not doing a RAID. 2x500 is easier to deal with.

I heard recently that if the motherboard is from the same manufacturor (i.e. if you have a Dell and get a new Dell mobo) then the OEM version of Windows will run just fine, though it may require "reactivation."

my mobo is an Asus P5-K, so another Asus mobo might do the trick?

Not necessarily, it'd have to be another one from Dell. It's my understanding that the motherboards are OEM just like Windows, and even though the motherboard is from the same manufacturing company, it is not keyed to the Dell brand name unless it is shipped by Dell.

The report I read on this was incomplete, and no test cases were provided, so I'd call Dell and discuss it with them before making any purchases.

Are you sure it's an OEM version of Windows? OEM versions are normally shipped by PC manufacturers like Dell, Gateway, etc., and are only intended to run on their machines. If you just went out and bought Windows somewhere, it shouldn't be OEM.

You'll still run into a few problems when swapping motherboards, though, since Microsoft considers that as being an entirely new computer at that point. You'll have to re-activate Windows online, or call them.

yeah, its OEM. got it cuz it was cheaper than the regular type. didn't think I would need to be replacing the motherboard, at least not this soon after building the thing.
I know it is OEM as it has the license info on the case/sleeve thing: "this OEM software is....blah blah blah."
