Eternal Darkness is an Action/Survival Horror game with some TPS influences, and is quite possibly the scariest game released on the 'cube.
Graphics: For an earlier GC game, the graphics are not bad. As long as you ignore the blur and jagginess of close-up shots, it looks fine.
Sound: This game makes excellent use of creepy sounds and music to constantly keep you on edge. As you sanity gets lower, strange noises begin to be heard, ranging from sobbing to mysterious pounding on the walls. It all serves the atmosphere very well.
Controls: The controls are easy enough to grasp. "B" is the action button in this game, used to finish enemies, open doors, and examine objects.
Story: This is where the game REALLY shines. If you have ever read anything by H.P. Lovecraft, this game will be VERY familiar to you. The story revolves around a set of ancient deities attempting to break into our world and wreak havoc. There are four Ancients in total, with three of them, Chattur'gha, Ulyaoth, and Xel'lotath set in a rock-paper-scissors arrangement where U<C<X<U, it is cyclical. The final Ancient is Mantorok, the Corpse God, who is superior to all. His job is to keep the three fighting amongst themselves and out of our world. This is where the story comes in. Sometime in the ancient Roman era, a Centurion by the name of Pious Augustus is sent to Persia to claim an Ancient Relic for the Emperor. After falling into a pit in the desert, Pious finds a room containing 3 Essences. He chooses one, and promptly becomes possessed by that Ancient's Power. He then decides to destroy humanity by releasing his Master, whichever Ancient you picked. So over the course of the next Millennium, he prepares, all the while being opposed by the characters you play as. You jump back and forth through time, opposing his efforts and attempting to save humanity.
Fun: If you enjoy Survival Horror and intense moments, you will like this game.
Replay: I gave this a 10/10 because, after beating the game once, you can play through twice more, each time choosing a different Ancient for Pious to support. This changes the alignment of the enemies and thus the difficulty, as each alignment affects different aspects of your character.
